Victorian Murder & Punishment

Email from Alan Warren, Sun 5/27/2012

Hi Ham I’ve been meaning to follow-up Uncle Ron’s email from Canada – now filed in Archives for August 2009 so here goes ! 1) attached are death certs for Amelia Blunt (43) who was the victim of a fatal knife attack by her former boyfriend Francis Wane in Sept 1864, He was found guilty and was executed in public in December 1864.

Less than a month later, in January 1865, the final public hanging in the County of Essex was also carried out at Springfield Gaol, Chelmsford. Amelia had been making plans to marry John Warren and if that had taken place there might have been an obvious link to our Essex Warrens.

But this sad story does have an unexpected link as follows :- Amelia’s maiden name was Wallis and after her birth in 1820 her parents had another 6 children, the youngest of whom was called Ellen (b.1831).

As you can see from the family warren tree, old Thomas Warren married his first wife in October 1853 and her name was Ellen Maria Wallis(22). Just to confirm this link, the marriage certificate names her father as John Wallis, Butcher and both details are confirmed by his Census 1841

(For anyone with an interest in reading the full story, Alan has provided an extract from “Foul Deeds and Suspicious Deaths in Barking, Dagenham and Chadwell Heath”, written by the Local History Curator in Dagenham. The extract can be found here.)

2) I have a spare copy of the quarterly magazine for owners & fans of British Salmson cars which contains my comments on the factory outing and a small work-party beside one of the cars. I will hand the magazine over to Cousin Janet and she will be able to circulate it in OZ this September. If anyone can’t wait that long there is a really good website at :-  britishsalmson.co.uk

3) in the post WW2 years a lot of people loved SPEEDWAY and I can remember us going to Wimbledon in the 50’s with Uncle Ray & Aunty Blue. Top riders for Wimbledon were Aussies Ronnie Moore and (later) Barry Briggs and there were some riders who stepped up from Cycle Speedway.

I’ve been looking around the internet just recently and found a site called ‘cyclespeedwayteamsdowntheages’  which has records showing how big the cycling version became in UK. Now one team with a very good record of team success was called Tolworth Tudors and then I found this :- 1958 Pete Rides won the National Junior Championship at Hungerford 1963 Pete Rides won Surrey Individual Championship

Its funny how vague memories can now be supported by internet searches ….. hope someone finds some photos of Pete Rides trophy moments !!

Regards Alan W
